Shooting in the rain with Izzie Austin

It was one of those nights where the forces (the shitty weather, the exhaustion and generally feeling fashioned-out) were clearly telling me to cancel the night out and to curl up at home with a DVD. But it was going to be my last night out in Auckland during the NZ Fashion Week buzz before flying back to reality, so we were determined to make something of the night.

After running into Hone & Pia (the couple behind Pia Boutique) and Pia’s little sister Shona at a random bar just off Customs Street, we headed to the Remix after-party for Fashion Week at the newly revamped Everybodys. I did take my camera to Remix, but after living half the shows through the lens I didn’t really feel like taking many photos so it ended up slung around my shoulder for most of the night. *No, I am NOT Snapstar, stop posing at the bar and go away.*

I caught up with Izzie Austin at the party, and we ended up heading to her friend’s flat for drinks. I met Izzie at the launch party for Wellington Fashion Week last year, and she’s been a regular face at these events ever since. Talented photographer, one of the loveliest people you’ll ever met – and did I mention she’s a model? The flat drinks were quite chill – an eclectic mix of interesting people. There were a few models, some mutual friends of my brother, and a really friendly Korean guy who kept apologising for being bad at speaking Korean (dude – you clearly haven’t heard me).  There was a polaroid there so we took a few then proceeded with Izzie’s friends to a bar somewhere in Britomart.


We ended up getting separated from her friends on route, so with no other plans we decided to start shooting in the pouring rain.

I am by no means a trained photographer so there is no conscious thought process or analysis going through my head – I point, I shoot. There is no elaborate setup, lighting tricks and post-shoot processing – I just want other people to see the same beauty that I see right there and then, in the same context and same lighting as I saw it through my own eyes.  I tend to see beauty in detail, so I like to pull the viewer into where I’m looking by setting a very sharp focus point – the beautiful bokeh (the blurry background) and a little vignetting which frames the subject certainly doesn’t hurt either.

One of the great things about shooting a model/photographer is they are both aware of their poses and how the light is hitting their face, as well as what a photographer is thinking as they work. So we roamed the largely deserted streets of Auckland, utilising story displays, streetlamps, and light reflecting off the wet pavement to create somewhat of a photo narrative.

It was certainly a strange night, but it was actually one of my highlights of the week.
