Where Customhouse Quay turns into Willis street, there sits Old Bank Arcade. A powerhouse of New Zealand luxury designers have their established their boutiques in close quarters, with Taylor sharing the same entrance-hall as Workshop, Zambesi across the road, and Ricochet, Andrea Moore and Minnie Cooper in the same building.

We had the pleasure of meeting Vicki Taylor and looking around the store with a glass of champagne. On the beautiful, old staircase with dark-wood banisters stood four models personifying the taylor look. I liked the muted palette of the clothing which suited the rich and sombre interior of the building.

The shop was bustling with dedicated followers of the cult of Taylor, revisiting the racks which I assume they knew very well already. It is understandable that people would end up relying solely on Vicki’s designs for their wardrobe, seeing as the clothing is of a consistently high calibre. It would be hard to step away from superfine silk and merino.

I imagine Vicki would value people buying a few beautifully made, high quality items over an excess of mass-produced, seasonal clothes. I very much like this about her and her label.
